“Ummah” as a community of all Muslim believers across different contexts and even across time is a modern definition. Historically, “Ummah” was multi-religious, multi-linguistic, and multicultural. “Muslims and non-Muslims should tap into this rich history and revisit its definition, bring this meaning that it is a territory where you can live even if you are not a Muslim and that civility will be maintained whether it is an Islamic order or not”, says Jocelyne Cesari, area coordinator of the Islam working group in our latest video-interview.
